This is in a sense my first painting in response to September eleven. My grandmother had died the previous spring in Finland. I could not attend her funeral and had still to process the loss. When I began to paint this I had many things to mourn. I have included my cousin and his mother in the back– taken from a photo at my uncle, his father’s funeral. He died soon after. The family of my grandmother is large and complex, she was an interesting woman. |
